  • Comments: This is a remade version of my first anime music video. I made the original a year ago, but never hosted it here or anywhere else. I shared it with a few friends and that was it. For all intents and purposes, it's brand new, funky fresh in the flesh. This footage is cleaner from better source material, and I fixed a couple of the edits I wasn't happy with. Still wish the very, VERY end was a little cleaner, but I'm at the mercy of my editing software. It's not like I'm not content or anything - I'm REALLY happy with the way this came out.

I have loved this song ("When The Rain Comes" by Third Day) since I first heard it, and when I saw the video, I knew I had to do it. I like to use music that hasn't been played to death, and I prefer stuff that most people have never even heard before. All of the footage comes from about a two-minute segment of Episode 18 of Kare Kano. It concerns a spoilerific moment of the story (i.e. "Luke, I am your Father" spoilerific) so if you don't want to ruin a great moment in the series... go watch it real quick, then come back. We'll wait....

I violated one major commandment of Anime Music Videos, and that is to avoid subtitles whenever possible. In this particular instance, there is an instrumental section at the end of the song where the subtitles technically play the part of the vocals. They are a perfect marriage of the story in the song and the story in the anime. But, I couldn't have the characters "speak" off-camera at the end, and then not have the subtitles earlier in the video when they were speaking and were on-camera. It's very subtle, and story-driven, so that IMHO it enhances rather than taking away from the impact of the video. I'm going to justify my decision by saying it was this court's opinion that the original intention was to avoid IRRELEVANT subtitles, and not subtitles altogether.

There was only one piece of this whole section of footage that I didn't use. When they first arrived at the bus stop, she says "We're soaked." I couldn't use the footage with her talking and no subtitles, and the subtitled clip didn't fit in to my satisfaction. So, while I really could have used those couple of seconds of "people time," I chose to do without.
