  • Comments: Did a bit of storytelling with this one, let me know if it comes through, okay? A profile of Hitomi and my interpretation of the movie, assuming that Gaea does not exist.

The idea was this: Gaea is Hitomi's inner/mental world rather than a physical place, and everything happening there is a metaphor for her real life. Van, the hero character in her dream world, was shown looking rather innocent when Hitomi was younger, but now she's a depressed teenager and her dream world has changed accordingly: not only has Van become violent, but a purely destructive character, Folken, has taken center stage. Hitomi's drawn by Folken (representing self-destruction) into her inner world as an escape from the dullness and pain of reality, but once there she's horrified by all the darkness and violence that's taken hold of her world, and she turns to her hero character. With Van for help, she starts to gain the strength to stand (or in this case, fly) on her own, which in turn allows her to help Van and repair the rest of her inner world, eventually giving her the courage to face the real world again.
