This is the complete version of the video that first appeared at Shoujocon 2003. This version will premiere at AWA 9.

"Drops of Rain" started out as a quick project that I could finish in a few weeks for Shoujocon 2003. After sending the initial cut to the contest, I continued editing by adding the introduction (also on the same CD) and changing a few scenes. Other than those scene changes, the second half of this video is the same as what appeared at the convention.

The "expanding wave" effect is something that is easy to do. It is intended to visually complement the triple-bell-tones in the music (hard to explain here in text). It's a stylistic rendition of water drops (I suppose that's obvious) which also accents the song's lyrics about rainfall.

The flowery-colored, blurred backgrounds were scanned from actual photographs of bouquets. There are about ten of these placed on the timeline, changing from one to another at the appropriate times. They are not static pictures; the amount of blurring changes slowly and some have very slight amounts of panning and zooming applied to them.

Some other details: the long rain scenes in the introduction are much longer than they were in the Utena movie. This was done by chaining copies of the clips together and then editing a bit. The early scenes of Touga are simple pictures in the Shoujocon edit. For this version I added rainfall to them. Another easy trick needing only a picture editor.

I wouldn't expect this video to do much more than look pretty. The Utena movie footage is always good for that. Although groups of clips belong together as extended scenes, I made no attempt to tell an overall story. For that sort of thing, see my other Utena video, "Portraiture".
