The main idea here came from a the knowledge that three specific sections from the film (the beginning, the train ride, and Haku’s flight) would go along beautifully with this song. And, I think I was right. The problem? Everything else. Specifically, there being too little great song for so much great movie. So, it was less a process of editing than having to weep silently in the night while great moments were systematically deleted and cut down to fit the song, a disservice to both the film and song. So, Hayao Miyazaki’s going to be ashamed, and Layne Staley’s gonna kick my ass in the great beyond. I’ll take my chances, though. I do think I did the best with what I had.
