  • Comments: After a more than a decade of it being stuck in the purgatory of my anime watchlist, I finally got to watch Revolutionary Girl Utena earlier this year. Determined to avoid spoilers, I held off on watching any Utena AMVs during this entire time. A few may have slipped past my defenses over the years, but overall I kept true to my promise and got to experience the series (1997) and the film (Adolescence of Utena, 1999) relatively spoiler-free. I thought this would open the floodgates for finally watching and fully absorbing two decades' worth of Utena AMVs in the weeks and months that followed. Instead of doing that whatsoever, I made this.

    In many ways this AMV is an absolute demo reel of my most basic style at its laziest. I did not push myself to try new things. I did not take the project as an opportunity to learn something new. I repeated a lot of simple techniques and bad habits that I told myself I would try to move beyond going forward. After several abandoned projects, maybe I just wanted to make sure I had something to show for myself before the year was over. If I had finished this a week earlier, I probably would have entered it into the big contest that everyone has their eyes glued to at the moment. I heard rumors that someone submitted an an absolutely stellar Utena video to that contest, so yeah, in hindsight maybe it's a very good thing that setbacks kept me from finishing this before September ended!

    This is an AMV focused on two of this anime's supporting characters. All clips were taken from just three episodes (7, 17 and 28). If I did not choose such a narrow focus or had not decided to work with such a limited palette of clips, I'd likely be paralyzed by choice and this AMV would never be completed. I cannot blame this approach for the scarcity of internal sync on display here, but it certainly didn't help matters.

    There are things about this video that I really enjoy but I am hardly an impartial viewer.
