A former elite runner Kakeru found himself "persuaded" by an enigmatic Haiji to join 8 others to compete in the Hakone Ekiden Marathon. With everyone besides himself and Haiji being a complete novice, Kakeru voices out the futility of Haiji's goal. However, Haiji stands firm to prove a point of what it means to be runner and soon the other members and Kakeru himself, starts to realize that they all are now striving to run in the marathon.
