Comments: In 1963, a new TV series called Astro Boy aired on NBC's networks in the United States. It told of a scientist who, after losing his son, constructed a robot surrogate to replace him. This show ran for 104 episodes and would become the first full-length anime series to become popular with non-Japanese audiences.

50 years later, anime is a pop culture phenomenon.
