I can honestly say that this is the only video I've ever been truly happy with. As it stands now there have been 3 different versions of the video, but the one on this tape is the final, never to be edited again, version.
For Otakon 2000 I had been planning to send in my "Enter Sandman" video (shown later in this tape). One day at work I happened to listen to this particular track and something about it just spoke to me. I can't pin down the precise moment when I decided to use Macross Plus. Usually I have one distinct scene from the anime that just immediately meshes in my mind, like a deciding moment for me. Right now I can't recall what that scene was or if I even had one.
It seems to me that a lot of people missed the point of what I was trying to accomplish with this video. It might be my fault for poorly translating it onto screen. In any case, here are what I consider the important points:
The song is being sung from Myung's point of view, even though she hardly ever appears in the video. In her mind Isamu is the one who was "uninvited." Up until they met again, everything in her life was going fine, even if it was a bit dysfunctional.
The video in general was meant to highlight the secondary love triangle involved in the series. Not the obvious one between Myung, Isamu, and Guld. Actually the one between Myung, Sharon, and Isamu. It was also important to me to show that what happened in the series had to happen. That it was the only way for all the characters involved to have some closure to their past. Which is why I didn't go for the happy-happy ending and instead had Isamu flying away in the final scenes.
Lastly, and most importantly in my mind, I wanted to show that Sharon wasn't the "villain" of the series. She was a figure, adored by the general populace, that was suddenly given intelligence. She was like a child with limitless power. And so she did just what any other child would do, try to get approval from her elders.
I also made it a point to have as little combat scenes in the video as possible. Mostly because I thought they distracted from the soap opera storylines I was trying to showcase.
Version 1 of this video was the one sent to Otakon.
Version 2 was sent to AFO 2000, the only changes being removing some rogue frames that slipped in and a couple of minor data errors.
Version 3, which is on this tape, was remastered from the source DVD footage. When V.1 was made, the best I could work with was 352x240 footage, and it showed pretty plainly. I decided to fix that. While I was at it, I made a few other minor changes that had been irking me.
Just as a final side note, the ending to the series still gives me goosebumps. I've watched the entire thing at least a dozen times, and I've always had the same reaction. By the final scenes, and I don't mean the combat scenes. I mean everything from the point where Myung starts singing to the end. My main goal was to try and get other people to have a similar reaction.
