This was actually the first video I started working on, but the second one I actually finished. Selective memory is blocking out that infamous Robotech video now.
I was working with a Studio DC10 capture card with a laser disc source on a woefully overtaxed computer. All of the equipment involved, except for the laser disc player, has been retired, probably for it's own good and I imagine that it thanks me from Silicon Heaven.
My basic goal here was to combine two things that didn't seem to go together and make them work, without making it a comedy video. The inspiration hit me while driving home from work. The song was playing on the radio and the when the line "take my hand, we're off to never never land" the whole video just clicked into my head. I immediately pictured the scene of Tenchi's mother and father being sucked in with Kane, still holding on tight to each other. The rest of the video just assembled itself around that.
I still remember sitting in the viewing room, before the contest, as the ballots were being handed out. People were reading them and seeing what they were in store for. The conversation in the row behind me went something like this...
"Huh? Tenchi Muyo and Metallica... What the hell is that? Enter Sandman? How is that going to work?"
I just smiled at that, feeling that I had already accomplished what I wanted.
