The second AMV I ever made, finished in roughly 4 hours last May. I can't really say that I'm amazingly proud of this video, and looking back at it now I see a lot of syncing flaws and various imperfections, but I kind of just wanted to have something uploaded so I looked through all of my AMVs I've created thus far and decided to go with this one. Please, don't be afraid to harshly criticize, as I hope to improve more and more at video editing and take every single constructive comment I get seriously.
This video was created back during the epicly long wait for the new Radiohead album, so I decided it was perhaps an opportune time to create a video to what was my favorite unreleased song at the time, "Videotape." This version of the song is taken from Nigel Godrichs' "The Basement" episode recordings, and is pretty much just Thom Yorke singing the song while playing the piano. After hearing this song and being filled with wonder at the sheer brilliance and simplicity of the recording and the deep lyrical meanings, I was inspired to create this AMV.
Essentially, the concept of the AMV is identical to the concept of the song; saying final goodbyes to a lover who the character will not again see in this lifetime. The character of the song, however, is afraid to confront his lover face to face, and instead records the message on an old style videotape. Although I wasn't able to follow every single part of the song word-for-word, I tried my best to convey the plot of the song through the FFX footage. Whenever there was a flashback scene referred to in the song, such as "the most perfect day I've ever seen," or "this will be on my videotape," I tried to complement it with footage of Tidus and Yuna's tragically short-lived love affair along with Windows Movie Maker's okay-for-what-I-was-doing "old film" effect to signify that this part of the AMV was referring to the character's videotape. At the very end of the AMV, when Tidus makes his departure from the physical realm of Spira into whatever his next life may be, I do as good a job as I could (at the time) to interlace footage from his videotape using the latest and greatest in windows movie maker technology (which I think most here understand really doesn't mean anything at all).
If I were to remake the video (which I'm never going to do, it just wouldn't be worth it to me), I'd work on making the syncing in the middle section of the video a lot tighter, since I'm not really pleased with how the syncing looks right now. Also, I'd redo the Tidus jumping/videotape footage interlacing, since it gets sloppy towards the end due to WMM's technical restriction of one video track only. Besides that though, I think that I'm pretty proud of it overall.
Once again, please tell me what you have to think about it. Although I already have a bunch of criticisms that I myself have come up with, I'd really love to hear from you guys. I'll never become a better video editor if I don't hear what other people have to say about my work, so I really honestly take seriously every constructive reply that I receive. Anyway, I've rambled enough. I hope that all you Radiohead fans out there feel that I did the song justice, and if not I'd love to hear how I could have done better. Thank you for your time, and I hope to hear some replies!
