This is the first part of The Utena Symphony, a project seven months in the planning and six weeks in the making. The Utena Symphony is a four-part dedication to a series that means a great, great deal to me.
Everything and Everyone: This is actually the last part of the Symphony that I thought up. Once I had the ideas for the other parts, I realized there was an aspect of the series that I'd never covered - namely, the other duelists. Just because she holds the title role doesn't mean the series is all about Utena. This video reflects the changes that the rest of the duelists go through over the course of the series, focused on the corruption that Akio brings about.
Drive My Car: When I was first working out the plan for this video, I knew that I had to find some common thread to run through the whole thing, something that would tie everything together. It didn't take long to realize it, as the last third of the series shows it very, very well. No matter who they start out as, or who they wish to be, everyone deals with Akio, and everyone has him bring something out of them that changes them and might make them someone they don't want to be. In the end, everyone takes a ride in the Akio Car.
Pseudo-Latin: The title, I think, is pretty obvious, and comes from the song itself: "There are no angels here." That was something I wanted to show in this video - all of the duelists have their faults, and what Akio brings about only makes things worse. "Angelis Absentis," the absent angels, seemed very appropriate for such a theme.
Waxing Symphonic: As the first of a four-part symphony, this video introduces the first of two major themes, that of corruption. The second will introduce the second major theme, that of love. The third will deal with the conflict that occurs when the two mix, and the fourth will be the resolution. Making four videos that worked together as a single thing was probably the biggest challenge of the entire project. I didn't want to reuse too much footage, else it'd get repetitive, but there were some things that I had to use more than once to get the message and so forth across.
Anyway. I do ramble. Spoilers abound in this video and in the entire Symphony; I highly recommend that you see all of Utena before you watch any part of this. Having said that, I hope you enjoy. Comments and opinions are always welcome.
Part II of The Utena Symphony, "Rosa Infinita," will be uploaded on Saturday, September 23.
