Has anyone bought LEGAL DVDs out of a sense of obligation?

Post by dazza1008 » Tue Apr 28, 2009 6:45 pm

For me, I have bought DVDs legally (NOT region 0/bootlegs) simply out of a sense of obligation to return something to the company, because I had used footage for AMVs. I've also bought music that I'd used for AMVs.

I usually don't buy/collect series or music even if they're great (because I don't really have money to burn), so the only reason they'd made a sale was because I'd made an AMV using their footage.

Has anyone else bought legal DVDs or music they would not otherwise buy, out of a sense of obligation? Or do you buy them legally and watch them, so you can use them for AMV-making later? How does the fact you'd make AMVs influence your decision to buy legal products?

I buy DVDs to watch. AMV material is just a post-purchase perk.

Only for the shows I really like. If I can find em. I dislike ordering em online, if I want my anime online I'll download it. If I stumble upon a DVD that looks interesting in HMV or at a Convention or in my local anime store (Chumleighs has a great selection) I buy it, or if I can't afford it then and there... I go watch it online.

I only buy DVDs that fit the two criteria of

a) Enjoyable to watch

and

b) Use for editing

Which of those two came about first doesn't really matter so much as it fills them both to an extent.

I NEVER download footage, nor do I watch fansubs. If it is not out in the U.S. then I buy the R2s if I want to use them in a video (like Ikki Tousen DD).

I find it hard to justify our hobby (let alone "Fair Use") if one doesn't even buy the DVDs. There are many popular videos on the org made out of downloaded footage (high quality RAWs, but downloaded nonetheless), and that hurts us when we try to defend our hobby. So, for me it is both ethical and practical to buy DVDs.

I used to watch fansubs for anime and after a while, I really didn't watch much anime for sometime. One night, I was talking to Darkpwns on YT and I told him about how I just cropped the subs out for my videos. He told me that it still takes away from my videos and then directed me to guide by Reda on how to rip DVDs and use Avisynth with Vdub. Although I had watched Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien streamed and was in the process of getting RAWs for it for White Houses. I decided the video was going to be a try out for a studio, so even though I really didn't like Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien, I bought the DVDs so I could make an AMV the proper way. I also wasnt well skilled in cleaning footage so I knew I wouldn't be able to clean up the raws.

But even though, I know how to clean up footage pretty well now, I just buy DVDs. Ever since I became active in the Org community back in August, I've been watching a lot more anime and buying way more than I ever thought I would. So do I do it out of legal obligation? Sort of. I buy DVDs because it's more convenient to me. I get to watch it in my DVD player with no hassle. I watch more anime and have high quality footage to work with.

We have a friend that brings over the latest series, so if we really like it we buy it. If we like the footage and can't wait until we buy it, we rip his DVDs :D Most of the Anime we've bought is due to him.
Yay!!!! for good friends.
