Ugh.. thats not what i meant, do you think masking is essential in any kind of editing.
Basically I'm just saying masking is a tool like an effect (or you could categorize them together), you use it when it's necessary so that includes any type of editing, it just depends on what you are trying to make. If that doesn't answer the question then I really don't know where you're going with this lol.
Lol. I mean do you think masking is really needed in the editing criteria. Do we really need masking? If that doesnt open up an answer I dont know where you're going with this either lol..

Jokes =D

Wouldn't my reasons stated before still apply to the question though? Maybe it's because I didn't give a definite answer lol. OK, yes it is essential but that is based on the reasons I stated before, it all depends on the type of visuals that you are trying to create. Therefore masking is needed in the editing criteria because without it, some of the videos we see today wouldn't have been able to be accomplished without the masking tool. I hope that answers the question =.=

Masking is not essential for the medium that we've come to call AMV's. There are however sub devisions within the medium that do require it. In the end it depends on what the editor wants to get across in the video at hand.

Do you think masking is essential to an amv or not? My friend and i are having a discussion about this and i want to see what you guys/girls think.
The only essential elements neccessary to make an amv are pretty implied within the term itself.

The footage has to be anime based.
It's got to have music of some kind.
That's it.

I would go a step further and say that some actual editing is neccessary, but there are definitely a number of "amv's" on this site that could support reasons to believe the contrary unfortunately.

I absolutly agree.

However I do think that masking is essential when it comes to more advanced effects. It´s not only about cutting out characters with masking tools. You also mask areas for applying lightning effects and other stuff.

Masking is absolutely required. Most videos are done to anime we've all seen before so unless you modify the footage we'll be sitting here bored. Been there, seen that, have the t-shirt and so on. So masking and other effects are vital to a good AMV. I mean without masking and other effects what do you have to draw peoples interest? Good scene choice? Editing well to the music? Bah, who cares about those things? Put masking in every video you make, even if there's no real reason to mask something.
