It's an opinion question... I like AVI, because it has much more versatility.

well I'll be your henchman jbone in saying that you guys should stop referring to avi as a codec.. 'avi has better quality' etc.
That said, let me rephrase the question (although it was asked once before) to:
What container format, video codec, and audio codec do you prefer?
me, I dont prefer avi or mpeg1/2 elementary/program streams. Personally I like ogg and its directshow video implementation. Although when the newer container formats matroska and MCF come out I'm sure they'll dwarf the hack of .ogg that is ogm.
I like ogg/ogm as a container right now simply because of it's internal improvements over avi (proper handling of bframes, vbr audio, ability to stream, better error handling) and because of the functionality of Tobias' directshow ogg and subtitle filters, since they allow for built in language titles, chapter points and names, and internal overlayed text subtitles. It makes it choice for sub&dub backup.
current favorite container format: ogg/ogm
Codec wise its a trade off. I use both RealVideo 9 and XviD. Most of the time however I'll use XviD because of it's ability to be used in things like the ogg contanier. RV sadly is STILL restricted to RM files even though the dna source code has been out for a few months
current favorite video codec: RV9, XviD
As far as audio goes, I personally find RealAudio 8 to be far superior to all other audio codecs to date. especially at low bitrates. However, it suffers the same inoperability problems as RV9 and thus I usually go with second best (but not necessarily bad), vorbis. Since vorbis is THE native audio codec for ogg/ogm, it works out alright in the end.
current favorite audio codec: RA8, Vorbis

this is an OPINION i personally use avi just because the quality tends to be better with ulead...and i usually use a divx codec. i was seeing what other people prefer-

Anyways, I personally like DivX 4/5 Compatible-XviD with LAME MP3 audio, or an OGM with XviD and OGG Audio.
