Here's a suggestion: use multiple masks. Don't assume that everything is done with one.

I don't even have AE, but could you copy your path to a new layer and stroke it with black?

Thanks!
Is there any way to do a stroke not for all 4 borders but to 2 of them?

am i right in thinking
the stroke will not produce an outline of a mask.

A stroke is an effect that is applied to the layer that happens to create
an outline only where the mask intersects the layer. If the mask
border goes anywhere outside of the layer, that part of the
border will not be outlined.

so a stroke is not an outline of a mask?

Honestly, as inefficent as this may sound, I create a new colored solid and put a square mask around that, then line it up with my already square masked footage. It adds a border, and allows you to configure it on a seperate layer. I found its easier to manage this way, however the other ways with the stroke should work too.
