Premiere vs. After Effects

Post by Hiro The Dragon King » Tue May 20, 2008 6:24 pm

I haven't seen this question yet and I cna't find anything while searching for it. I'll keep this question short and simple. What is it that makes Premiere able to use an AVS Plugin that makes After Effects unable to?

I was just wondering because I was thinking of trying out an effects video and I also wanted to try making a video between the studios. I just thought it would be easier to do such a thing if my sources worked in both programs.

Theoretically, you may be able to put each of your clips in their own individual sequences in Premiere and then import the entire Premiere project into After Effects. After Effects automatically breaks the project down into all it's individual elements (all the files used in the Premiere project as well as all the sequences and such in the project). I don't know if that would make it work or not, though. It depends on what method AE uses to read the sequences. (I would imagine it still won't read the .avs files on their own, but maybe it could read the sequences if it somehow utilizes Premiere to view them.)

Granted, this is in CS3. I don't know if that capability was in prior versions or not. You might try it though. :?

You can import premiere projects into ae in versions prior to cs3, but not even ae cs3 can read avs files directly. If you're wondering about importing a premiere project that uses avs files into ae, I suggest you to stick to vfapi or ffdshow's makeavi... basically they both make a "fake" avi file for your avs file... just remember to turn off the audio and make sure that you have the full video path in the avs file.

Yea, I figured as much. It's not something I've ever tried (I don't edit with .avs files). I just thought AE might use some of Premiere's decoders or whatever to read the Premiere sequences. Obviously, that's not the case, though. I just thought I'd throw the possibility out there, but since it's been rejected, so be it. :P

Yeah. I figured I have to do that. I was just hoping I wouldn't have to throw another program into the loop.

That aside, is there an actual reason that After Effects doesn't have a plugin for it? Is it that no one made one or that no one can?

I suspect that it's just that no one has bothered. I don't know of a reason for it to be impossible, at least.

Well, I was thinking it was because of effects. AE is an effects program. I mean, I get errors putting simple keying effects on thing in Premiere sometimes. Maybe no one has bothered because if Ae is gonna crash using it, why bother. That was the only thing I could come up with. I don't think it's impossible, just impractical.
