Is there a tool to change wmv. files to avi or mpg?
Well, I was wondering if there was something out there to change a windows video/audio file into a avi, or a mpeg file? Well, thanks to anyone who replys.

Yes there is.
Though I've never actually gotten to the conversion process, I do know it converts WMV/ASF to AVI or MPEG.

Fast/easy answer. Versions of Virtualdub prior to and including 1.4c had ASF support. After that they got in trouble with Microsoft because they own patents on the ASF format and how to encode/decode it, and so anything that decodes/encodes ASF/WMV needs to cough up some money to M$. Just secure yourself one of those copies of vdub and you should be fine. Version 1.4c can be found on doom9.org if you look hard enough. I don't know about WMV support, but I do know for a fact that ASF works and WMV is essentially the same structure.

Yeah, I saw that v dub did that. I've even looked for a older version of it but have never been able to find one. Thanks, and I'll check that doom.org for it. Cause although that thing Wolfwood told me about does work, it's a 30 day free trial and I'm a cheap basterd, so I'm not gunna buy it...That would be crazy.

WMV was changed enough around that they aren't "ASFs" how the old VirtualDub recognizes them(considering that ASF was just a streaming hack of AVI).
Also, some ASFs still can't be read properly by the old VirtualDub(and definitively not WMVs). Doom9 and a few other sites have a method using a combination of GraphEdit and VFAPI; fortunately, there's an easier solution I found last weekend reencoding ZOE2 trailers using just GraphEdit.
...
Curses. Unfortunately the best explanation page for this is down(and gone from the google cache), and it's easier to explain using pictures. I may do a quickie guide for this and other uses of GraphEdit, just so that a "blessed" copy is lying around..
For people experienced with GraphEdit, it's a simple matter of removing the device output filters, and chaining ASF/WMV Video Decoder->Smart Tee->AVI Mux->File Writer. Add a desired video compressor between Smart Tee and AVI Mux if you don't want raw frames.
