Warning: Noob questions

Hi everyone,

Alright, I've tried answering these questions through reading FAQ's and other forum posts, but I seem to be missing something.

I have a bunch of .AVI files that I'm trying to import into Adobe Premiere Pro 7. I was getting an error that said there was an unrecognized compression (or something like that) which wouldn't let me import them. I read some stuff here and figured that I was missing a required codec.

So, long story short, I downloaded and installed a codec pack. Once I did that, I was able to import fine, but my computer started acting strange and I had to uninstall the pack.

My question is: Is there an FAQ or a guide I've missed that you could point me to? And if not, which codecs are the most used/needed? Is there a codec pack anyone could recommend me downloading?
