Preview visible in After Effects?

Preview visible in After Effects?

Is there any way i can set AE 7.0 to bother using system resources on the segment i have visible at any given time? (By visible, i mean what the camera is showing in the preview window)

I'm working with an excessively large high-resolution image and i need to synch video on top of it (I already have it placed) but unless I disable preview it takes 30 seconds or so to load up the frame before i can attempt to make a change then another 20 to 30 seconds each time i move the clip even one frame. I already have the preview set to 1/4 and each image at draft quality. but the size of this image is so large that each frame takes a while to load. I've turned the huge image off for now (visibility switch) and that seems to work, but I'm going to need to do the whole process (masking over a segment, applying a few effects, then lining a video track up with the masked segment) a few more times and wouldn't mind saving myself the trouble if it's possible.

That should read "to only bother" i.e. it will not waste resources by previewing areas outside the preview window.

why not try the region of interest and only select the portion that you want to render

I've tried that, but it only helps a little bit more. I guess i'll have to deal for now.

I'm getting by with the lowest possible resolution can manage to still be able to visually line things up correctly and disabling layers that aren't needed for the specific parts I'm working on.

The fact that I'm running a core 2 duo with 2GB of RAM and a high end graphics card and I'm still chugging along in AE makes me laugh though. :lol:

The thing about it is, if any part of the image is displayed onscreen, after effects has to put that entire image into memory, because it cant just decode an arbitrary part of it. If you are working with a lot of 3d layers, turning on opengl or wireframe preview can be helpful.

Also, when you get a piece set precisely how you want it, render it out to a lossless file and toss that on your timeline. Saves you a LOT of time and effort later if you need to just check over what you did.

I understand that. In fact I wish that's all it did. But it also seems to be doing a good deal more than just that which is on screen. I can tell because i'll randomly get image buffer errors while i'm working. For the most part with enough small fixes i've been told i ended up with a tolerable environment for this for the time being.
