I'd heard differently about the rape thing... I guess, as long as you don't look like Chiyo-chan, you're safe. I did see hotels.com had rooms at the Doubletree at 7801 Leesburg Pike for $79 a night. It's not walking distance, but if you're driving, it's less than 5 minutes to the 'con.
