that mashup = http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... hp?v=63441 ? I don't know. If it is, congratulations to Ivory Knights Productions for becoming ambassadors of free culture. (Fitting name, too, I guess.)Lessig's keynote, "Free Culture: What We Need From You," was a great opening for the show. Lessig talked about participatory culture, and the fact that the current environment is legally hostile to a "read-write" culture. He peppered his talk with video clips such as a Muppet Show and Vampire Hunter D mashup...

This was posted to the AMV ML today. I don't know why the person that sent it didn't also reply to this thread, but I thought it should be noted here as well...
As you can see, the message links to this thread, so again I am puzzled why he didn't post here as well.AMV ML post wrote:It has been noted noted before that Lessig uses
AMVs as a prominent example of the "read-write
culture". A recent post on the org mentioned his
LinuxWorld presentation:

The talk is actually available in its entirety at:

The AMV clips are shown about 13 minutes into it.

I just finished watching the video. Dr. Lessig plays clips from two AMVs at about 13 minutes 45 seconds. First is Thisu Kissu by Inertia of ManyLemons Produtions. The second is the video trythil linked, Muppet Hunter D by Zury_Talbourne and Miyuna.
He also played clips and entire videos of other stuff shortly after the AMVs. First was Brokeback to the Future by ChocolateCakeCity.com. Next is a video that I cannot locate at the moment, starting with the agent Mountain Dew/Matrix marketing tie in, then going to clips from Fox News and various other Fox shows, and ending with a shot with a green outline "FOX" logo with the text "THE MATRIX HAS YOU" over top of it. Then Hard Work George by Sim Sadler. Next was Read My Lips by ATMO. The last clip he played was Jesus Christ: The Musical by Javier Prato.
The whole presentation was pretty well done, I thought. I hope those that attended or see the video do take some action to help promote Free Culture.

Hmm, mixed in with all the FOX show clips is a clip from a Discovery Channel clip. I still have no idea where it is from. Dr. Lessig gave attribution when he could, but apparently could not track the original source of this video down, as it has no attribution.Coderjoe wrote:Next is a video that I cannot locate at the moment, starting with the agent Mountain Dew/Matrix marketing tie in, then going to clips from Fox News and various other Fox shows, and ending with a shot with a green outline "FOX" logo with the text "THE MATRIX HAS YOU" over top of it.

intriguing I'll watch those when I get home.
I had someone at the last anime con I attended asking me a whole bunch of questions for his thesis on fan/read-write culture. Funny thing was he wasn't an anime fan or much of a fan of anything (sci-fi, LOTR etc) so it was interesting that he was doing this for his phd. I gave him a quick run down on anime, what various words meant, fan-fiction, webcomics, cosplay and amv's. I then left him to stumble his way about the convention.
So at the very least the universities are taking an interest in this little sub-culture of ours but I doubt anything will change on the legal front.

Lessig presented the same AMV's & other videos at Chris Anderson's "<a href="http://www.nypl.org/research/chss/pep/p ... =2372">the long tail</a>" lecture on Thrusday, Sept 28th. It was a thrill to know someone's AMV was being shown that was the same one on my HD.
