DVDs in japan

Post by CHAMELEON_D_H » Mon Jul 10, 2006 6:14 am

I'll be visiting japan in august (YEY!!), and I was wondering about a few things.

Do they have english subtitles? Is it even common?
How much does a DVD cost at a shop in japan? A single DVD \ Box set.
Are there "old" anime sales?
Are there any recommended shops to look for and\or look out from?
What do you want as souvenir, considering you come to Israel to pick it up?

Thanks in advance.

they can be damn expensive. They cost the same price as you see at this site..

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/

Japan sucks when it comes to having there DVDs in other language and they're so damn expensive.

CDJapan doesn't list any real detail on DVDs. Not about the subtitles at least. Don't they even give subtitles for japanese?

Even though, no One Piece DVDs were found there, so I couldn't really tell.

Generally, Japanese DVDs don't have English subtitles except the very odd exception. Most don't even have Japanese subtitles. And they are pretty expensive compared to US DVDs. The majority of Japanese R2 anime DVDs have only 2 episodes per disc for about $50, compared to 3, 4, or even 5 episodes for the US R1 equivalents at $30.

Example: Ah! My Goddess TV

J R2 DVD, $53.10, 3 episodes, Japanese language, no subs.

US R1 DVD, $29.95, 5 episodes, Japanese and English languages, English subs.

That being said, I am looking into buying the Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu DVDs...

I always thought that they were only that expensive off of cdjapan because it's an import site. It would probably be cheaper in an actual store....maybe

And of course even though there's no subs, they still make great AMV footage.

I'd check out used stores when you're there for DVDs. "Used" may be a dirty work here in the U.S., but over there they get people that buy the DVD, either watch it once or simply rip it and then sell it back to a used DVD place and you can get a substantial discount. I bought 11 Bleach DVDs and while they retail for around 4200 yen each, I got many for between 2600 and 3600. Strangely enough, the ones that came with the most extras (character sketch book, bonus CD) actually cost the least.

My R2 Macross Vol 1 is marked as 4800 Yen, but I only paid $25 for it new. You never know what you might find.

You might want to go to Osaka and check out Anime Jungle. They have tons of Used stuff (And some new stuff, too), and at decent prices.

Currently we dont plan to visit Osaka, but since JUNGLE is a chain, I hope to see one at some other place. Thanks for telling me on them.
