Fading effect
Hello there, I am a relative AMV noob, sorry if this isnt in the right forum section, but I just wanted to ask about the fading effect I have seen in a lot of amvs where there are two different clips playing at the same time but one is like see through in the background, is it possible to do that with windows media player which is the only program I have atm?
Thanks in advance

The correct forum section for questions like this is Video Software Help. But I'll answer this here since this post will most likely be moved anyways.
The simple answer is "no". The complicated and messy one is "maybe".
Depending on the exact effect you are trying to get, WMM can sort of do this. Lay down your first track then add the track you want to play along next to the first. In the Timeline mode, drag your second track onto the first one. The clips will essentially cross-fade into and out of each other for the duration that they overlap, so at the beginning, the first clip will be more prominent, then the 2 will be equal, and finally the second clip will become dominant.
This most likely won't give you the effect you are looking for since you can't adjust the opacity of the clips independantly and precisely. Ideally, you'd want to use an editing program that supports at least 2 video tracks (Premiere, Vegas, Magix, etc.).

And God spoke unto the Chicken, and He said: "Thou shalt crosseth the road", and the Chicken did cross the road, and there was much rejoicing.

Use VirtualDub and AviSynth to output another AVI.
a=AVISource("clip1.avi").ConvertToRGB32()
b=AVISource("clip2.avi").ConvertToRGB32()
a.Layer(b, "add", 128)
See here for more information.

well, just right click the clip and choose fade. If you really want to go into details such as flash fade you can create a short clip, add fade into black and then fade into white. And when you run it it should make a flash. The shorter the clip is the shorter the flash will be. I barely use wmm so Im alittle rusty on giving out information. I use vegas.

I think he was asking about a transparency effect, rather than a fade, from what he described. Although I'm not an expert on the capabilities of WMM--I never delved into it very far, beyond simple editing techniques--even if such a thing is possible it's probably a giant PITA. If he has the money, he'd probably be better served getting a relatively cheap editing program than trying to beat WMM into submission. WMM is workable, but it's a pain, even for a simple cut-n-paste AMV. (That said, if he doesn't have the money, WMM isn't a bad place to start)
