Anime Music and AMVs
When I was learning how to make AMVs, I was always told that it is a taboo to use anime music, especially music from the same show to the anime you're editing.
Has that rule changed by any chance? I see too many videos done to the show's extended theme song, makes me wonder...

LOL. I've never heard of that taboo, and I don't care. I did both, combining music from an OST with it's own anime as well as with a different anime. And for sure I'll do it in the future too. Combining music from an OST to the anime it was made for has the advantage that the footage fits perfect. But it'll often be seen as not very original. You shouldn't do it too often. And to make a "crossover" - what's different to choosing any music?

Personally, I wouldn't do it, mainly because I'd find it boring... now on the other hand though, especially if it's not such a well known anime, chances are some or most of your viewers aren't going to notice that you used the OST of the source anime anyway, however, even if that maybe, I still wouldn't do it, because as I said, I'd be tired of it too quickly I would have seen it aplenty in the anime.

I don't generally like the idea of mixing the music from one show with another (Note, I'm not saying never do this, hell I've done it myself, granted not with anime music). Mainly because there's already associations of the music to another show, and it throws off the feeling of the video. I also shy away from using Japanese music in general, the main reason there being that I can't understand the lyrics, and it'd feel way too pretentious to pretend that I can.
As far as mixing anime with it's own soundtrack--too easy. I wouldn't do it myself. Yes, it may match perfectly...but it's suppossed to.
