Decisions, descisions....wat to export to...?

Post by Bushido Philosopher » Wed Nov 20, 2002 1:24 am

I'm having a lil bit of a dillemma...

I can't quite decide what to export with for internet distribution.

- MPEG-1 is good cause of its compatibility, but i'm not sure aout the quality....maybe i should just rise the max bitrate?
- MPEG-2 is like really good, but almost useless, since it gets so big...
- ErMaC's suggestion on XviD doesnt work with me. The codec is still in alpha stages so its error prone (at least on my computer it is)
- And i'm not sure if i want to use DivX since its getting old...

so what would u suggest? if its a form i didnt list then i prolly can get it exported to it, so go ahead and list it.

Thanks everyone...

i guess it would be safe to say that mpeg would be the way to go just so you won't have many problems

Yeah, I prefer mpegs myself because they are so much more compatible than avis. Avis, you can't play them if the person used an obscure codec, or if you don't have the codec, or if the person did something strange with the encoding, etc. Mpegs, with some exceptions, just play. They just work. They are larger, but they are more user-friendly.

My advice is to use mpegs, but ErMaC and AbsoluteDestiny know what they are talking about so, theoretically, you shouldn't have any real problems if you follow their guide if you really want to go avi.

I'll stick with mpegs, myself, though.

If you are just distributing over the net then go with mpeg1. Mpeg 2 is really usefull when submitting your video to cons and tapes and disks so the quality is better but for filesize to quality the best you can get is mpeg1 in my opinion. Xvid is good but very few people (outside of creators) actually posess this codec and you will recieve complaints from people who can't play your video and it is difficult to work with the footage later should you try (supposing you deleted the source files and are now working with your output). Go with mpeg1.
