Opions about originality

Post by Bluemantis » Mon Nov 18, 2002 10:57 pm

I was looking at a few opions given to some of the videos and I feel that their is an unjust rating on originality. I personally feel that originality should not be judged by how often an anime is used in a video, but instead on how was it done.

That's how it's supposed to be done. A video should never be judged by how "overused" its anime is. An overused anime and song combination, though is another story... I can't say that I won't score low on a DBZ/Linkin Park AMV. Unless of course, you did something completely new and different with it.

Well sometimes people give High rateings in orig because they never seen the song or anime in play or the style the video was visioned as. Now most people tend to look at the List of anime's and then demarit or points there which I think is unfair. I say you should rate the videos on your count and not everyone elses.

I agree. Originality should be judged on how often the _idea_ has been done, not the source.

I think it's best to score Originality on song/anime combo...

All the genres copy each other so what's the point?

^_^

If the anime is overdone, but the song brand new, then yep, it will lose a point or 3 from me...

Is it Linkin' Bark? Oh yeah, -5 baby!

I couldnt agree more. I make it a point NEVER to judge on anime, or song, but rather how it was executed, if the techniques used were original or seldom used, if the idea is original, effects etc, but never ever on anime/song.

The whole thing about reviews is that you are judgeing the technical merits od the video, AS WELL as giving your opinion, but people loose site of that very quickly.

The biggest improvement that I think most people could make in their opinion-giving is to outline why they gave all the numerical ratings that they did somewhere in the text of the opinion, probably in the general comments. Originality is just one of the often unexplained numbers that an opinion giver will throw at you. I've often wondered what different people's standards for capture are as well. I.E. if your video is DVD-quality except for some artifacts that slipped through for about half a second, what rating would you deserve?

I agree, you shouldn't judge based on anime/music combo. However, not to say that I don't take it into account AT ALL, but definately you should put much more weight onto things like the editing styles, effects, and general idea of what the creator was trying to do with their video. Maybe they used an anime and song that have both never been used, but then their editing technique was just run of the mill same old stuff you see everywhere. I doubt I could give over a 7 or 8 for a video like that in originality. However even if they make a likin ball z video, if they do thins with it that I never would have expected (and it works!) then thats definately getting a high originality score!

That is how it's supposed to be judged. Of course something else factors into originality and that is concept. so it's not just what song and anime combination you did but also how you employed it.
