okay, here is my situation. THE BOOK MAKES NO SINCE TO ME.

i'm stuck trying to understand the part where it says how to use alpha key as it's own transition. It makes no since. I don't even now what the video controller is.

Ok, if you are coming across terms in the book that you dont understand, then you probably skipped or missed something very important EARLIER in the book. There should also be a glassary or index or whatever where you can look up the various terms.

Of course, I have never seen this book, so it could very well be a piece of crap and you are justified in your non-understanding of it. More likely though, you just need to start from the beginning, and not skip over parts.

no, Zar, the book is crap... :D it doesn't really provide any useful information, it is just there to fill out the box the cd comes in.

Anyway, what is it you are trying to do? Maybe we can come up with an answer that way...

On the copy that I have, it's page 72.
Custom Slide FX with Alpha-keying
Alpha keying extends the range of transition effects used to produce black & white movie transitions or selected color fade-ins and fade-outs. Select "Alpha effect" in the video controller and configure it as its own transition. Alpha keying uses the brightness of alpha key objects to regulate the transition between two videos on adjacent tracks.
The alpha-keying object should reside between both videos. Where the alpha-keying object is black, the upper video should fade in where the alpha key object is black, and the lower video should fade into the white areas. Grey passages will result in a blend of both videos to produce a mix. In colored passages, the brightness of the colors is used.
Copy your alpha key videos into the transition plug-ins sub-directory so you can easily access them for other projects.
Having trouble playing back videos? I recommend: Image

Indeed!
I burned all of my magix material except for the CDs (and product key because its on the stupid CD folder.)

The best way to learn Magix is to just play. Things become painfully apparent before long. Just dont expect same day results. In fact the only thing I use magix for anymore is creating unique masks to import to Premiere or FCP.

if you are simply trying to do alpha channels and figure out how they work, here's the gist of it:

Code: Select all

v i d e o l i n e 1
     a l p h a c h a n n e l
                   v i d e o l i n e 2
1. video line 1 is playing along la-di-da
2. as the time line gets to the alpha channel (which is normally an image that is black and white or some shade of gray), anything that is black in the alpha channel will show video line 1, while anything white will show video line 2 where all three overlap.
3. once video line 1 ends, all you have showing is video line 2.

there are a lot of things you can do with the alpha channel. You can use a static image, or a black and white video image (such as a shattering effect) to transition between video clips, or a moving static image to do a complex matt of images...

it all depends on what you want to do and how much work you want to put into doing it too.
