Download AVIcodec from here:

Install and then right-click on your AVI file and select AVIcodec: detailed information. AVI codec will show you what codecs are used for both video and audio streams in the vid and if you have them installed (supported). It can also list all the codecs you have installed on your system.

You can also click on the "web" button(s) at the bottom to go to a site that will have the proper codecs available, e.g. if a video uses Divx V5, the button will take you to http://www.divx.com/divx/.
