Comic Book Effect - Opinion?

Post by ANTDrakko » Tue Oct 18, 2005 6:13 pm

I know some of you are wondering what the hell a "comic book" effect is.

Well what I am referring to is making a scene look like the camera is scrolling through a comic book page and certain scenes are activated when relevant.

For example.

I plan on doing a similar effect in the video that I'm working on and its turning out good, however, just kind of curious to get other editors' opinions on such an effect.

"Why the hell do you want our opinions?"

Why, thank you voice in my head, good question.

I haven't seen many videos with this particular effect in it, or even too similar of an effect. I really like it and want to see either more vids with it or your opinion on it.

I also tend to be overly critical when it comes to me doing something I haven't done before in a video 8-) .

La! Lalalalala! La! Lalalalala! La! La! Lalalala! [etc]

I think Ashyukun's Bouncing Through the Years used this too.

In general I like these kinds of effects, because they use the video source as an element of the main video screen, instead of just putting flashy crap into the source.

Of course the danger is that it stops being about the video and it just becomes a load of videowalls flying about the place. Most of the time the focus needs to on one segment of video, showing more videos only as a transition. You could do two videos, but only if they can be watched together in the same frame (instead of having your viewer switching back and forth). In other words, the focus should always be abundantly clear. Your viewer should never worry about missing something in some other frame that he's not looking at. You can play with this in many ways, to have two (or more) videos onscreen at the same time, but it's very easy to overdo it and lose
your viewers attention, so I'd mostly use the comic book effect as a transition. Although, unlike taskmasta, I would keep the comic book effect visible all the time, just along the edges.

That actually seems like a pretty good way to go at it. All you have to do is make a line art of each one that you can cover up the animation with till you're ready.

If I understood what you meant.. then that's one of the "effects" that I kinda like, since it has at least some point in it. It would really give out an impact if the background really is black&white/greyscale at first and when it starts playing it gets colour. Remember though that it still is a spicing for the concept ;)
Fox approves ^^b

Well, there's always

Combine that with some additional compositing work and you might get what you want.

I think you ought to have a good reason to use it. Don't just throw it in your video because you think it looks cool, unless you can do something really orginal with it.

I am sure you could probably get an amazing video if you have the right source and song. It actually makes me want to make one like that.
