Actual good dubs in animes...

Post by A2L » Mon Jul 11, 2005 6:32 pm

So me and a friend had an argument over dubs in animes. I've been ranting that he needs to watch Full Metal Alchemist for like a year now... he finally decided to watch it on Cartoon Network and was repulsed by the dub... can't blame him

But he started saying that no anime has ever had good dubbing... while in the midst of the argument I realized that over the years i've seen animes in jap and english and there have been a good amount that were over decent quality...

unfortunately I realized I could only remember a few off the top of my head like Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, FLCL, Shogun, Samurai X (OVA, excluding VA for Tomoe) and Akira (VHS dub) and then drew blanks...

anyways now, i'm just curious on what you guys considered to have really good dubs for the anime... but if you think the VA's for FMA or Rurouni Kenshin were really good, please don't post your opinions... and if you believe the Dragon Ball has awesome VA's... just hit back now...
If I had a dollar for everytime I was called an e-tard... I'd have a lot of pills.

No offense, but this subject was brought up a billion times, and I'm pretty tired of recommending the same thing every single time (which is by the way Your Under Arrest which had a really excellent dub). Not to mention people's subjectivity of certain dubs may get out of hand. Like for example some people considered FUNi's dub of Fruits Basket absolutely exceptional, but others think they suck ass because some bishie guys aren't voiced by girls (or at the most sound "girly") thus losing some "femininity." It's neverending.

If you want to read up some dub reviews, I suggest you go to these sites:

That may be your fan-bias talking... I've seen a few eps of Azumanga Daioh and, well... A southern accent in the place of an osaka accent... yeesh! Some people say that Inuyasha has good dubbing. That's also their bias talking... T_T

Cowboy Bebop has wonderful dubbing. It's the only thing I'll watch dubbed if I had the choice, nowadays...

I guess Max Payne isn't much of a yaoi fan...

I though the Berserk dub was really good. Well acted, lots of emotion, poor lip sync however.

I admit I was apprehensive at first when I heard about the southern accent for Osaka, but given Osaka's character and the fact that it's a light drawl, it ended up working somehow. The only one I really have a problem with is Yomi -- normally Nancy Novotny nails her personality, but her yelling (which she has to do fairly often) fails to convince me.

(Is A.D. Vision even capable of dubbing the Kansai accents as anything other than a Houston-area Texan accent at this point? :?)

Personally, I think there are just people out there who will hate dubs no matter how good the script and acting is. Your friend just may be one of them. I wasn't impressed with the dub for RK but I think that Funi did a decent job with FMA. What was wrong with it specifically?

Texhnolyze
Koi Kaze
