I suspect it may be user error.
I have a wireless system at work, and I serve about 7 computers that way, all of them seem to work fine. I have had as many as four people watching fansubs, and two editing from material on my computer with no real issues.

Wire connections and even your hard drive can be every bit as unreliable, that's why you always test your files when you can. I've run into file corruption through FTP transfers, downloads - even just files collecting dust on C:\

Wireless connections may be generally slower than a wired connection and slightly less secure*, but other than that there's nothing wrong with them...
* If you're concerned about security, you'd better be relying on more than just the medium to protect you...
