Producing an AMV

Hiya,
I'm sorta new at all this and I'm not really sure where to get started. I was hoping someone could help me in the production of an AMV. I have a project coming up and I'd really like to string images of tragedy together for an AMV. It isn't just animated, it has real life scenes too, and I was wondering where I could get started on something like that or where I could get a program to aid me in creating a video. Any help will do, I'd greatly appreciate it.
