Cheap MP3 Player for Cars

Post by TaranT » Tue Mar 29, 2005 4:26 am

Costco had a palette load of something called a "VR3 - MP3 FM modulator" going for $24 each. Walmart is also selling it.

It's a thumb-sized thing that plugs into your car's 12V power adapter (aka cigarette lighter socket) and broadcasts on an FM channel. There's a USB socket that you plug any memory stick into. The device will play the MP3 files on the memory stick and if the car radio is tuned to the same channel, you've basically got a cheap MP3 player for the car with potentially greater song capacity than a CD changer.

There is another jack that you can connect with a cable to a Walkman, iPod, etc. and it will play your portable player's tracks through the car system.

There is no LCD display. Just a play/stop button, track forward and track back buttons, a button to switch the FM channel, and LEDs to indicate which of the seven possible channels are in use.

I can't find it on the Web, but here are links to two similar devices. The difference is that the Costco one connects to portable players and these do not.
