Yea, you don't need to run .AVS at all, although I'm sure there's been some GUI or just script-maker programs around. But generall, AVS is something you use completely via scripts.
It sounds daunting until you realize that .AVS scripts are little more than text files consisting of a few straightforward lines. Read the guide Scintilla linked, that'll explain everything...
