How Does One Make an AMV?

I'm just wonder how the AMV-making process works. I've heard there are multiple techniques and I have quite a few anime DVDs so I was wondering how I could make an AMV.

Two days on the board, and still haven't been notified of asking a stupid question!

Here's how I make a music video: I listen to a boatload of music, thinking on every song about what anime it could go with, or if it's even worth making into a video.

By that point, just by the tone of the song and the anime you're going with, you should already know the type of video you're going to make. So capture all the in-any-way relevant footage from the show, then construct away.

I like to tell a story in mine. Make it so that someone who's never seen this anime can still understand it and enjoy it. But that's your call.
