Opacity Dilemma

First, here is a visual aid:



I am using Vegas Video 4.0

Here's the problem:

I can easily lower the opacity of the smaller clip inside the larger clip, but I can't raise the opacity of the large clip to match that of the opacity of the small clip so it is a half and half clip. As it shows right now, when it gets to the middle of the fade, the small clip is halfway opaque on front of a black background. If you have any suggestions, I would appreciate them.

I'm assuming this is the full Vegas, not Movie Studio, because of the curves on the fades. I'm not quite sure what you're trying to accomplish, but try this:

Insert another video track above the one you have. Instead of putting the small clip on the same track, put it on the new upper track instead. Then add the fades and opacity change.

To change the opacity on the lower clip, you have two options. One is to split the clip with the 'S' key at the appropriate points. But the better method is to use the Composite Level envelope and add points to the envelope where you want to make a change. BTW, you might want to try leaving the lower opacity at 100%. Otherwise, you'll see the overall picture darken quite a bit. But that may be what you want.
