WMP Problems

Post by 7sigma » Mon Jan 24, 2005 7:21 pm

Yeah, I know, I should have ditched this thing long ago. Anyway, there I was updating my WMP to the 10th version and suddenly he decided to play all my files at double speed. What the heck? :? Anyway, I'm asking for two things here.

1) A link to the lovely, lovely, Windows Media Player Classic.

2) A hint to what the hell is going on. Why would he decide to speed up things on his own? Does WMP likes high-pitched voices? It sounds just like the Chipmunks are singing every song in my PC

1) This may suffice.

2) I don't know. You might want to check the speed settings: View>Enhancements>Play Speed Settings

Ok. Now this is getting weird. I've downloaded the WMP Classic (thanks, AMVfreak), but even with it my clips are playing at double speed. :?

I've checked the View>Enhancements>Play Speed Settings, but that don't seem to be the problem. Not only the setting is in 1x but that enhancement does not work with .avi files. Should I begin chopping my PC or it is one of those stupid mistakes?

A little googling here and there brought me these results:

Microsoft says:
Microsoft wrote:How can I keep my files from playing too fast or too slow?

Most likely, your sound card's clock has a timing problem. To fix the problem, try reducing the hardware acceleration level for your audio card by doing the following:
1. From the Start menu, click Control Panel, and then double-click Sounds and Audio Devices.
2. In the Speaker settings area, click Advanced.
3. Click the Performance tab, and then adjust the hardware-acceleration level.

Keep in mind that, if your sound card supports multichannel (5.1) audio playback, turning off hardware acceleration will cause the sound card to play all multichannel audio in stereo (two speaker) sound.

Also, check for updates for your sound-card driver and Microsoft DirectX from Windows Update.
Also, this useful link came aboard on google also:

According to Microsoft and the helpers on the thread above, updating your sound driver will solve the problem you are having with the excessively fast playback.
I suggest finding out your soundcard, and getting on the web to find a updated driver for it, and see if it works.

Aha, now that makes sense. I have onboard audio, and I have been warned my CMOS battery has severe troubles. Hardware acceleration was not the problem, as not even the lowest level seemed to fix it. I'll try updating the driver, but most likely I'll have to reflash the damn BIOS. Time for some serious backup here :D

By the way, I wasn't able to get any help from google until I typed "chipmunks". Now this kind of problem has an official name! :P The chipmunks ate my sound card!

Thanks again for the help, AMVfreak. If I don't show up again in the forums again for some time, well, nobody said reflashing your bios wasn't rocket science 8-)
