Looking for ATL AMVers who want to work at a con!

Post by SQ » Sun Nov 21, 2004 11:57 am

TechWood Con 2 is a small con that started last year. I had Iron Chef there for its first year. It was fun, but small. Regardless. It's at Georgia Tech, January 7 - 9.
Directions

Now, TWC2 is looking for staff.

This involves a variety of positions. There's regular boring staff(Boring to me anyway) and then there's AMV Staff, for their VAT room.

I'll divide this into sections for easy viewing. Go me.

REGULAR STAFFING
[taken from staffing page.]

Techwood Con is offering free weekend passes to the convention in exchange for working part of the con as a staffer. Available positions include watching over one of the gaming rooms, setup, takedown, events, registration, "Con Ops", security, and gopher.
There will be two staff meetings before the convention that staffers must attend. Topics will include the overall con schedule, assigning people to specific jobs and time slots, and legal, safety, and other procedural guidelines. Two mandatory staff meetings will take place. We will keep these meetings brief, but staffers must attend both so that the management knows how many people we have for each job and in which time slots.
If you are interested in volunteering at Techwood Con, e-mail[ staffing@techwoodcon.com ] our head staffer. Act now to ensure that you will get your free weekend pass to Techwood Con!

AMV VAT STAFF

Last year's VAT at TWC was very sad. They had a laptop, a projection screen, and Animix. That was about it.
They took whatever students/fans had downloaded and showed them on the pojection screen if they thought it was good or cool. There was no AMV Contest.

TWC would like AMVers, who know what they're doing, to help set up a good VAT for TWC2. They really like AMVs, and they want to give our works some justice!

I am not sure what the tech requirements are(If you have to bring your own equipment or if they can get it for you) but, in the words of a forum head:
wberry wrote:If you want to run a panel, great. If you want to run an AMV contest, awesome.
You'll need to get in touch with the head staffer at staffing@techwood.com

The VAT staff is basically just panels, and TWC2 is really interested in AMV Panels. It doesn't really matter if you're a big name or not, I mean hell. They offered me a panel. ;)

AMV CONTEST
wberry wrote:I think it would ultra-cool to have a Techwood Con AMV contest built from the ground up by people who really know the art form well. Who knows what new and cool things would come out of it?

E-mail me (see profile) and we'll chat some more about it over the next few weeks. I will ping our Anime programming director Simon Li as well about scheduling, use of equipment, and so forth.
So basically, if you want to run an AMV contest and have any idea of what you are doing, please contact Wberry.

You can get in touch with him through me, by writing your letter here and I'll paste it as an email to him, or you can Sign up on the TWC forum and email him yourself.

I don't know what wberry's email is, since it happens to be hidden and integrated into the forum somehow. Sorry about that. ><;

So anyone who is intrested in any of this, please help post here, spread the word, and help out!

Okay, here's the deal. WE REALLY NEED AN AMV CONTEST HEAD!
We also have openings available for panelists.

Here is the info you need, as there's a meeting coming up!

If you email somebody, tell them SQ sent you.

----

Staffers and Directors,

The Techwood Con staff meeting will be Saturday December 18 at 1PM at the Georgia Tech student center. I apologize for the short notice. If you cannot make the meeting, that's OK; just keep in contact as the Con approaches and everything will be fine.

Directions to the Tech student center are on the Con website under "Directions" on the left. Let's meet on the third (top) floor in the pre-function area. (That's where the Con registration table was this past time.) There will be couches there we can use. If there's something else happening we can move to the second floor lounge area.

Here's the skinny: The Con will be open from 8AM all three days, until whenever Friday and Saturday, and until 7PM on Sunday. (Officially, we'll see whether we can last a little longer on Sunday.) We promise that you will be obligated to serve only six hours, and can enjoy the rest of the weekend for yourselves, for free of course.

We have the following general roles for staffers:
- managing the various rooms / security
- registration / dealer & artist relations
- gopher, setup, takedown

Decide which of these you would like to do and which day you would prefer to do it. E-mail me or your favorite director before the staff meeting if you can, and at the staff meeting we will try to distribute everybody as evenly as we can.

The staff meeting should take about an hour, maybe a little more. The agenda for the staff meeting is:
- Introductions and niceties
- Where everything is going to be
- How everything is going to work out
- Working out what times and roles everyone wants
- Getting psyched

Random Details:

If you want to supervise a room, you can be in video gaming, open gaming, artist alley, panels, anime, tournaments, or LARP HQ. Pick your poison.

Registration will probably not be that stressful because it will be mostly electronic. No nightmare scenarios like sifting through reams of unalphabetized prereg lists. We will have a laptop with the prereg database on it and a SORTED paper printout just in case. And as long as the loptop keeps working, you'll be entering nicknames for non-preregistered members. (They will get a discount next year!) Easy.

For dealer relations, there may be some amount of gophering, but mostly it will be checking with them periodically to see if they need anything and some setup / takedown logistics.

For setup and takedown, the brunt of the work will be with the video gaming / LAN area in the ballroom and the anime room. Carry some boxes, TVs, etc. and hook stuff up, then undo it on Sunday night.

Gophering is gophering. He needs this, she needs that, go find Robert, etc.

And I guess that's it for now. Thank you all for your time, your effort, and your enthusiasm. This con is going to rawk!! E-mail me for anything at all, or call me at [number] See you Saturday!

Other general information:

We are still soliciting panel and tournament ideas, and people to run them! Post to the forum or e-mail one of the directors.

Pre-registration is open on the Con website and will stay open until January 5. Get your friends to pre-register and receive a discount at the Con.

Also, to hook up with wberry, I finally got his email!
