Gankutsuou

I just saw the first episode and was really impressed. Very interesting animation technique, excellent non-Engrish OP and ED and general gothic creepiness. This could be the best series of the year in my book.

I'm not familiar with Dumas' book about the count of Monte Cristo, but there doesn't seem to be much of a connection between the anime and the original story except some names. Anyway I'm ready to bet that this will be the new favourite of fanfic writers. I'm scared already. :P

Wasn't the opening and ending songs sung by some French dude?

Anyways, yes the animation is weird but very stylish; I think this is one of the most stylish show Gonzo has ever done (probably because Mahiro Maeda is involved, and we've seen him doing lavish designs in other Gonzo series).

Why was I not aware of this Gonzo title...?

Enticing elements visible already. I'll research the connection, to what degree is there a loosely based connection with the source material of the names of some characters. The possible Dumas namesakes are intriguing enough alone. Goth? Always a plus. Goth creepiness? Uber-plus. And great OPs and EDs always seize my fancy. Thanks for the inadvertant heads up.

I just finished watching episode 3 and the show just keeps getting better! I haven't been this excited about a new series for ages. :D

I also dug around the official site and found this pretty good Real Media trailer.
