why is it that in free fansubs that a lot of times it starts getting blocky and pixleated in the really good parts.
sometimes it will play right through it, but more often than not it just shuts down.

Don't know.... The org gets kind of testy about fansub discussions, though...just to warn you.

Short answer would be that it's more difficult to cleanly compress scenes that contain a high amount of motion. Compression is less noticeable when it comes to still shots or those with very little movement. That's where your contrast comes from.
