.AVI or .MPEG : Pros and Cons?

Post by SpLiF_3d » Sat Oct 02, 2004 9:21 pm

hello ppl....i've been on the .org for about 1/2 a year....so not long enough to start giving advice and still not fully understanding all of the different things in the amv world. well anyway...

i was wondering which final format people prefer and the reasons why?

i myself have only made a few amv's and up until my last release i was using .mpg because it seemed a heck of a lot cohesive for me as a beginner. + it worked w/ vcd's...for when i wanted to show friends without computers. now, saying that, my last vid was compressed in XviD and i can definately see the higher quality and the file size was almost exactly the same...only 1mb less the .mpg. but of course this .avi can't be read by dvd players. hmm... se la vi

any response is welcome....
sorry if this is too long and especially if this exact same thing has been posted before...

laterz...SpLyF

Actually, a lot of newer DVD players can play XviD/DivX AVI files.

And it's "c'est la vie".

I prefer AVIs, but that's just because they can look a lot better than MPEG-1s at comparable sizes IF the encoder had some idea of what s/he was doing, and I don't really care about showing them off to other people on standalone DVD players. But I don't mind MPEGs either.

thanx for the correct spelling of the phrase, been sayin it for years never knew correct way to spell it....

so why is that there are different standards or encoding?

i mean everyone would like the best quality, right? i know this also depends on the quality of source footage.

couldn't it just be said to use the better quality format?

ps. scintilla, love your vids!!!

Historical accidents, limitations of computing power.

By the way, AVI is a container format; MPEG denotes a huge set of technologies. Be clear about what you're talking about.

If by this you mean "why do people still use MPEG-1", the main answer is probably "portability". If you give someone an MPEG-1, you know they'll be able to play it, no matter what platform they're on and what other codecs they have, unless their computer is ridiculously old.

Also, in my opinion ease of encoding. I know that I, quite stupidly, encoded my first few video as mpeg 1 not really knowing what i was doing. I realised that an .avi would produce better quality but i couldn't figure out the correct way to encode the files. I was recomended tmpegenc by a friend and so i used that as it was very easy i told it the files and filter, and it spit it out. now, of course, i know better and i use Xvid to encode but i know a lot of new people who llike the ease of mpeg encodes.

oh and i rank nowhere near these other guys in technical knowledge for video and their formats but i felt that this was soemthing being overlooked in this discussion
