The problem with music

Post by rubyeye » Mon Sep 20, 2004 3:06 pm

Here's a very interesting acticle explaining how bands get screwed by major labels. You think just because they signed a "major deal" they've hit it big? Think again.......The Problem with Music

Well, read the whole article and it's true but I can't believe people don't know this "truth" already.
It's the Music Industry, the Music Business.
One thing I do know a lot of is the Business World.
It's lucrative and it's there to make money.
One big pie that everyone tries to take home, at least a piece of it.
One piece is enough.
Signing into a Record Label is like selling your soul sometimes.
Are there music lovers, altruists, entrepreneurs, idealistic people, naive people, worthy people, truthful people in the Music Business?
Yes, but that's neither the norm nor the point.
Ideals don't matter in the end because ideals don't pay the bills.
Basically: Do or Die.
Even so I love music and wouldn't mind setting an enterprise in that section of the market.

I've read this one a while ago, actually (over HERE <- in fact I think it's laid out a bit more neatly there)

It's all quite obvious, and I'd have to hit myself on the head if I didn't know this. For one, my favorite musician Robert Fripp keeps beating that point into my head on at least a weekly basis.

If anyone's interested and doesn't mind some slight deviations from the subject at hand...

http://www.disciplineglobalmobile.com/f ... aims.shtml

^Technically, a mission statement by an 'artist-friendly' label run by Fripp, which also goes into the reasons for needing such a label and the problems with the music industry. If you don't feel like reading about the company itself, go 'CTRL+F' and plug in "Why 'independent'?", and it'll lead you to the relevant sections (it sort of starts on the following paragraph). There's actually some very good insight in there.

Hmmm I think Powerman 5000 did a song that pertains to this:

The song is called "Free" off of the album Transform.

"Free"

Let's go!
Everybody needs to start their own fire
Everybody needs a riot of their own
Everybody needs to be something that they are not
Everybody needs to go it alone

Because!
Living so free is a tragedy
When you can't be what you want to be
Living so free is a tragedy
When you can't see what you need to see

Okay!
All the time spent hanging on to anything
All the time spent knowing that they're wrong
All the time wasted, stolen back, innocent
You won't get a second more so move it along

Because!
Living so free is a tragedy
When you can't be what you want to be
Living so free is a tragedy
When you can't see what you need to see

Living so free is a tragedy
When you can't be what you want to be
Living so free is a tragedy
When you can't see what you need to see

Wishing and hoping and thinking it's you
That's got this all under control
Never a minute has passed you all by
When they haven’t invaded your soul

It’s not something you can hold
It’s not something you own
It's not something you can buy or steal
You've got it when you're alone

Being free is a tragedy
When you don't know yourself
Being free is a tragedy
When you don't know who you are

Living so free is a tragedy
When you can't be what you want to be
Living so free is a tragedy
When you can't see what you need to see

Living so free is a tragedy
When you can't be what you want to be
Living so free is a tragedy
When you can't see what you need to see

Let's go!
Hey, hey, hey!
Alright then
This is the story of your life man
The Big O will KILL you!

King Crimson has a song that pertains to this even more... in a way...

HAPPY WITH WHAT YOU HAVE TO BE HAPPY WITH

And when I have some words
This is the way I’ll sing
Through a distortion box
To make them menacing, yeah.

Then, I’m gonna have to write a chorus
We’re gonna need to have a chorus
And this would seem to be as good as any other place
To sing it till I’m blue in the face,

And for a second verse
Of terse economy
I’ll brew another pot
Of ambiguity, yeah

Then, I’m gonna have to write a chorus
We’re gonna need to have a chorus
And this would seem to be as good as any other place
To sing it till I’m blue in the face, yeah
We’re gonna need to have a chorus
I’m gonna have to write a chorus
And this would seem to be as good as any other place
To sing it till I’m blue in the face,

Happy with what you have to be happy with
You have to be happy with what you have
To be happy with what you have
Happy with what you have to be happy with
You have to be happy with what you have
To be happy with what you have
You have to be happy with what you have
To be happy with

Then, I guess we’ll repeat the chorus
We’re gonna repeat the chorus
I guess we’ll repeat the chorus
We’re gonna repeat the chorus
Then, I guess we’ll repeat the chorus
We’re gonna repeat the chorus
I guess we’ll repeat the chorus
We’re gonna repeat the chorus (Ha ha ha)

Happy with what you have to be happy with
You have to be happy with what you have
To be happy with what you have
Happy with what you have to be happy with
You have to be happy with what you have
To be happy with what you have
You have to be happy with what you have
To be happy with

heh heh that was good Oto.

When I was reading the "We're gonna need a chorus" I was think reading (!?) it to the tune from another Powerman 5000 song "Action". "We're gonna need some action, we're gonna need some action soon"

Apparently Powerman 5000 and Orgy have (or at least the bands' lead singers) created independent labels that cater to the musicians.

Meagtronic records Powerman's indie label. Spider's mission statement Is he commie?

D1 music Orgy's indie label. Mission Statement
