That's because your .avi was compressed by a codec that Premiere doesn't like, such as Xvid or DivX. If you can get the original source, you should convert it to uncompressed RGB for editing, or use an .avs file.
If you can't find the original source, then you should use .avs editing. Read the lovely guide here on how to do it.

Or HuffYUV. Saves you space, but retains full quality (okay, a tiny loss if you convert from RGB to YUY2, but DVDs are in YV12 anyway, so you wouldn't be).7sigma wrote:That's because your .avi was compressed by a codec that Premiere doesn't like, such as Xvid or DivX. For to save even more space, I've heard good things about Lagarith...

If I read that part right, there shouldn't be -- YV12 has half as many chroma samples as YUY2, so you'd just need to take each 2x2 chroma sample, split it into two 2x1 samples, and there you go.Janzki wrote:I can't say I fully grasp the guides and colour theory, but isn't there a loss in YV12 -> YUY2 too?Scintilla wrote:Saves you space, but retains full quality (okay, a tiny loss if you convert from RGB to YUY2, but DVDs are in YV12 anyway, so you wouldn't be)
