Download Preference!

Post by Ab-109 » Mon Jul 19, 2004 1:02 pm

Howdy guys and gals 8)

At the moment, whenever I release a vid I put a high quality version on the local download and I make a lower quality version which is usually half the size which I then host and link to directly.

The thing is, I get alot more downloads of the direct link version than I do of the others and I wantes to know why.

DIRECT (393) DIRECT (364) DIRECT (280) DIRECT (323) DIRECT (618)
LOCAL (97) LOCAL (113) LOCAL (144) LOCAL (167) LOCAL (198)

As you can see its usually about twice as much on the direct compared to the local one.

I guess I better get to the point lol

Why is it that more people are getting the direct ones instead?

1. The fact that its a direct link?
2. Smaller file?
3. Faster bandwidth??
4. Any other reason?

Just trying to figure out how I should go about distrabuting my vids! ^_^

Because direct avoids alot of the hassel of the org, and new people with their two week delay still on can download them.

Direct Link values are often deceiving.

While it is true that the direct link will allow more people to have access to the video (non-members) it will also be often used by download accelerator programs that will "hit" the link many many times meaning that not every hit will be one download.

If you have a way of measuring the bandwidth of your site you could divide the video size and get a closer approximation of the real amount of people that have downloaded it. With the org, it's always just one person even if they download it twice.

Oh and, you might give out your direct link to friends not on the org at that, and those count I belive.

Hmm forgot all about the 2 week thing and had no idea about the download acc progs

The thing is, I'm gonna have to delete stuff to host my new vid (since I can't here) but I didn't wanna like stop alot of people downloadin my amvs.

So you don't think its actually all that much?

PS: no I don't have a way to check bandwidth :(

I wonder why people go for direct, though I suppose the 2 week thing would explain it.

Heck, for instance I didn't even register for the .org when I first visited it (I believe that was a good 4 years ago), and I was actively using it to search for just 'direct' sources for a long time until I finally registred a year ago.

But I dunno, local has seemed like the best solution since then.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Well, i use my site (altho it looks like crap) to host my vids now (i found it's much more convenient to try your new vids on people). When i've tried a vid enough and made a final version i locally upload it to here, but also keep the final version on my site. I think it's just a lot better to have it in 2 places instead of one. And also if there is still something wrong with the vid i uploaded here, i can put up a direct link to the vid, and advise people to use that one, instead of the buggy uploaded version

i personally prefer that people use the local links if they can.. that means my star rating gets effected, the org is usually faster then my site *unless you download after 9pm* and the org is just better... i usually put the high quality version of my vid on the org, then use the direct link for smaller lower quality versions.. also, if you dont want your bandwidth to be destroyed, getting people to go locally can be a very good thing.. *last month my site used 99 gigs of bandwidth... so if your worried about your bandwidth i would suggest doing indirect links, most people go through the org before they use indirect links..* thats pretty much it for what i have to say.. i kinda strayed off away from the question.. but here are my answers to the question.

if im downloading something on a slow connection, i would get whichever file was smaller... If i was on a fast connection, i would get whichever i thought would be faster.. if i was in a hurry i would use direct link... If i was in my 2 week waiting period, i would use direct links, and if im just downloading amvs.. i usually go for local link... it helps me keep up with wich vids i've downloaded incase i wanna op em..

I personally will always prefer a direct link over a local link (unless it's a lower-quality copy), as:

1) I don't donate
2) I don't like having to give stars
