New Rating System ??????????

Post by genestarwind21122 » Tue May 04, 2004 3:08 pm

Phade or one of the mods or anyone. In my opinion the old way was much better than this. 1. The videos are being affected by the other videos according to what your saying "C = the mean score across all videos (average all vids)" But the average of all vids is constantly changing which will constantly change your scores.

I just don't see how this new scoring system works. My guess is that you did this so vids with 8 ops couldn't or would be massively hard to get into the top 10% then why didn't you just up it to let say 15 or 20 ops. Before it was 4 then 8 why not just up it agian?

Strike that reverse it. The videos with more ops are getting hurt for example my Outlaw Star Trek with 16 ops had a 8.10 rating but Mr. Oni's HLA X 2.1 with 8 ops had a 6.21 but not has a 6.77. WTF what is going on. It isn't suppost to be like this. But I guess your trying to balance out some of the bad ops you might get earlier to make up for it.

I really don't see how this works why is everything screwed up.

The average for all videos is recalculated each time an opinion is added so that the average is always correct.

It is quite complicated, I'm not quite sure how the system works now. A number of vids (including My vid), which was near the top, is totally gone off the list now ;p (it only has 11 opinions) I guess this would help get rid of the "Trendy" vids, or videos that were Pimped to get on the top 10%, and just keep the ones that are truly masters.

However, One thing I see bad about the new way, is what if an AMV is not well known, because of its Song choice, or maybe even animation choice, so people are not likely to search for it, sometimes you might find it on the top 10% list because of the reviews it has received. Then you know its good because its on the top 10%, and might check it out. Basically it was kindof like exposure for those vids less likely to get noticed otherwise.

What I would suggest is maybe keeping both of the systems under 2 diferent sections? Like have the old way for videos that just released, (top 10% new videos) and have it adjust based on if it gets new ops or something, and keep this new system for the older videos. Even if you don't do it exactly this way, I think there should be a top 10% list just for new videos not more than a year old anyway, I think it would be a nice feature.

Anyway my 2cents on the matter, throwing ideas out there for consideration.

I think the star list is intended to let people find out about more recent videos that are good, whereas the top 10% is more of a "legendary videos of all time" thing.

true, but the star rating system is somewhat relative. If someone that doesn't enjoy that "kind" of video sees it and rates it, he/she may give it a low star rating. There are alot of videos I consider good that have high ratings, but low stars. This I beleive is because the rating system is somwhat standerdized as how the video is rated, while the star system is left completely upto the person to give whatever he/she wants based on whatever reasons he/she has, and also because the stars is required, unlike the opinion system, so those who didn;t like the video (maybe for reasons aside from technical and story merit, like someone who likes action vids, downloaded it thinking it was action and got drama, etc) has to leave a star, which might not be good because he didn't enjoy it.

Thats besides the fact that the stars will also be dominated by the "legendary videos of all time" vids also, Euphoria being an example.

I just think we need something that JUST deals with the NEWest videos, made within the last year or so, where older videos like Euphora don't show up on it at all.

Again it is just a suggestion.

I can also see this perhaps leading to increased numbers of opinion exchanges, offered by people who are trying to get their video(s) onto the list but need a lot of ops so to do.

I won't state whether I think that, or the change in general, is a good or bad thing.

New videos still make it to the star list, for a little while at least.
And check out the weekly star lists sometime. I can assure you its not dominated by the same videos all the time.

if people are honest with their ratings, it won;t get on the list unless its good ;p And if its good, its a good thing, so more people will find out about it.

I do see your and Zarxrax's point, I just still think that an ADDED feature (not a change to the existing one) dealing with top rated new videos would be a nice feature. Those that don't like could still continue to use just the old one.

or... posibly having the ability to "sort" the list, removing videos older than a year from the list. As just a clickable option or something on both the starscale chart and the top 10% list.

Again just a suggestion to make the service even better ^_^

Its not a big deal, just one of those convinience things I feel would both help people searching for just good new videos, and creators get good new videos exposure among the many videos being uploaded on a daily basis.

sorry for double posting, thought about it after reading a diferent post ^^
