Quick Easy Survey For AMV Makers Of All Abilities

Post by Wheee_It's_Me! » Wed Apr 28, 2004 7:00 pm

I'm trying to see how much technology influences the creation of AMVs. So if you could list what you consider to be your "best" video, when you made it, what sort of effects you used, and what tools (programs, hardware, etc) it would really help me out.

I'm not necesarily trying to prove that you DON'T NEED expensive equipment and software to do a lot of advanced effects, because obviously you don't, it can just make it easier. Really I'm just looking for what's commonly used so I can see if something like the including of Windows Movie Maker in WindowsXP has had a major influence on the community.

Also, if you have the time, for veteran AMV makers, if you could tell me about the evolution of programs and hardware that you've used that would be really helpful. Specifically like if you started off using Windows Movie Maker and then maybe started using Adobe Premiere later on.

mmm... this belongs in General AMV.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I'll tip the mods off, should be no problem for them...

It's had an influence, that much is certain. Whether it's good or bad depends on your attitude.

I've never made an objectively good vid, aaaand I don't use anything fancy or WMM (I'd try WMM, but it doesn't run on my machine), so I really can't answer the poll.

Just about anyone who has their head on straight will tell you what you've already said: that skill makes the video, and that programs make it easier for most people.

My best video (in my opinion) would be Mikako's Hope. It was created in July 2003. I used Flask 6, VirtualDub, Premiere 6.0 and TMPGEnc. There are no digital effects. The entire video was done with cuts and fades.

I'm not entirely sure if I'm a veteran AMV creator, but I did make my first AMV with WMM, and regardless, I still enjoy watching it. It's horrible, but I made it. Be proud of what you do. I do use Premiere now since it's the closest thing to a stable editor I've ever seen and it gets the job done. I hear these horror stories of how many times it crashes. It's only crashed....twice I think for me?

You can make an incredibly technical video or a beautifully artistic video or just a straight up good video with WMM. Want proof? Take a look at some of the following videos:

Denial by Arigatomyna
These Angel Hearts by Cyanna
1000 Miles by PrettyGirl
Growing Together... by StaceS
Susumu's Tears by Loveable Neko Kyou

These are just 5 examples of the numerous good videos created using WMM, and then look around at some of the horrible videos created using Premiere. It's not your equipment. It's what you do with it.

What I think to be my best video would easily be "Flowers Shouldn't Fight to be Number One." I made it using Adobe Premiere 6.0, Sub Station Alpha, and VirtualDub.

Honestly, I everything I did in Premiere probably could have been done with any other video editing software. The extent of my use of Premiere beyond cutting and arranging clips was the use of black & white filters and changing the speed of a few clips. With a little bit of ingenuity, I probably could have done the entire thing in VirtualDub (although, it would have been a giant pain in the ass to turn an entire clip into monochrome frame-by-frame in Paint).

I use this. I made these.

The feature list and the videos can speak for themselves.

Oooo, fun.

I guess I would consider Dueling Videos: Under Ice to be my best video so far (not counting my ACen/Otakon video that hasn't premiered yet), seeing as how everyone else seems to think it's my best. I made it from October to December 2003. The first half or so was made on Premiere 5.1, and the second half was done in Premiere Pro, with Photoshop also being used at several points along the way.

Effects used include:
- various motion and scale effects
- playing with opacity and transparencies
- abuse of the Garbage Matte in various forms (moving boxes, piano keys (just once), etc.)
- black and white (desaturate)
- brightness/contrast
- lens flares (just two)
- adjusting clip speeds
- lip synching
- subtle split screens to aid with lip synching and sped-up clips (implemented using the Garbage Matte) (example: Shinji revolving the handle at 4x, while the door opens at 1x)
- push transitions
- CHEESY SUBTITLES

My best is currently Belldandy's Memories. I made it started making it back on May 12th of this year and finished April 9th. The program I used were MGI Video Wave 4 and Movie Star 5 for the audio clip capture (Keichi shouting Belldandy).

Effects
-Box Effects ... cuting them in third size so one slide across the top and then loops back down into the middle row the opposite direction, then the bottom row back the same direction as the first.

-Background sceens

-Black and White

-lipsync

MGI Video Wave 4 $80.00 but $30 mail in rebate.

Move Star 5 - Gift from a friend.

In my experience the first vid I made was the Ultimate Sacrifice was with WMM so was Gene's Last Breath half of it until I got MGI Video Wave 4. You see you don't need adobe to make good videos. I've been using MGI Video Wave 4 and for the last 6 months using some of Movie Star 5 for making vids. Soon to get MGI Video Wave 7. These programs are somewhat more simple to use but require more paitence in timing. Plus some Gene Starwind 21122 methods of editing. Like counting out the beats in a certain area timing it diving how long the area is by the number of beats to see how fast they have to be. If the beat is constant. Then if the beat isn't constant see if it is picking up exponitally or doubling or trippling in pace. Well that's my experience. You can see what I mean if you want.

But do it for fun and don't lose site on the lyrics and the meaning of your video that goes with the song. Don't focus on the beat if it is going to screw up your video.
