Editing with .avs files

Ok, I've been ripping my DVDs and and editing with the crap versions and then exporting the .avs file in and exporting the final product like that. I've tried to edit with .avs files before, and it runs fine until I start making edits to the video. Any time I have a transition or some single frames it slows down and everything messes up (I always preview to screen in Premiere) My question is what kinda hardware do you need to edit smoothly with .avs? Currently I'm running a P4 2.4Ghz machine with 400 Mhz bus speed. A Radeon 9000 64 MB. And 1 gig of RAM (DDR 266?)

I've got an Athlon XP 2000+ (1.67 GHz), 512 MB of memory (effectively 480 because 32 goes to the video), and onboard video, and editing with AVS scripts has never been a problem for me.

One thing that really helped stability and speed in my case was to make it so that the beginning and ending frames didn't show up on the Timeline in Premiere, just the names of the clips. Before I made that change, I could easily send Premiere unresponsive for a minute or two simply by scrolling through the Timeline.

Well, that seems to speed it up quite a bit, scrolling through the timeline window and such. But, I still have the problem of my preview to screen. Usually that's how I do it with my crappy video exports, but with AVS it just can't keep up with any of the complex scenes. Am I stuck having to do a full render everytime I want to preview my video?

You did try the preview to ram option instead of preview to screen?
I'll also state the obvious in that you should use a fast preview codec like Mjpeg.

The rule is: no matter how fast your computer is, there will always be a way to slow it down enough so that it pisses you off at some point.

I have a 3.2 ghz, with a gig of ram, 800mhz fsb, and I still don't like usin' .avs to edit with. Doesn't have as precise a "feel" as the other codecs do for some reason.
