Distro Closing Down

Post by Red Wolf » Sat Apr 10, 2004 7:36 pm

I have decided to shut down the AMV Distribution Center. This decision has come about after several of months of thought on the subject and with several personal and logistical reasons behind it.

When the Dangling Carrot on AnimeMusicVideos.org took off, later exploding into the Golden Donut we all know and love today, I think the need for the Distro quickly dissipated. The Golden Donut is one of the best things to happen to the AMV community and I will continue to be a strong supporter and donator to it as long as I'm involved with AMVs. However one could view it as direct competition for the Distro and I must say that within a month of Golden Donut itself going online the Distro's request traffic went down significantly. Since then requests and submissions have both become very low.

Operation of the Distro has also become more difficult lately. Most notably new regulations at the USPS now require that I hand deliver every package to a clerk at the post office. Considering that before the new security all I had to do was bring Distro packages into work with me and put them in the out going mail this has become a major inconvenience. It has resulted in a much slower turn around as well as a hassle for myself.

The final set of reasons are personal. I have a new position at work and new responsibilities, including studying at home for certification exams. I've become more involved in local organizations which are demanding more of my time. My anime viewing is down and I can't remember the last time I did anything toward an AMV aside from think about one in the car. While the Distro is taking any where near every waking hour it does have a tendency to come up at the wrong times and it is a stress point when blocks of requests arrive at once.

There is also a question of motivation. Requests are down. Submissions are way down and I got very little response on a proposed AMV DVD distribution from creators. And there is also still the issue of 1 out of 5 requests not being done properly and thus digging even more into my time.

I will be maintaining Distro operations for any requests currently in route. However any packages that arrive post marked after April 12, 2004 will be returned to the sender without burning. I will be maintaining the Distro's burn files in the event of a special occasion warranting them, however the Distro will not be returning to any kind of public function. Feel free to email me about this manner at red_wolf@mac.com or post here.

I want to thank all of the requesters and submitters over the last year and a half. I think the Distro has helped a lot of people out in terms of getting their AMVs out and satisfying the needs of fans not quite on a fast Internet connection. It has been fun, I just think its time has come.

I never knew much about it, but I'm glad you put the effort into it. Good luck with your future.

Shame to see it go... It was kinda nice to think that the SASE system was working. Not asying that it's not on other levels or anything, but in regard to AMVs anyway.

All the best and just try not to get a guilt-trip over it. I'm sure you won't, but best to say so anyway.

I never sent anything in or requested distro, but I do appreciate the fact that you did do it for so long Red Wolf. You are my own personal Jesus Christ, and if you ever find your balls needing a toungebath, let me know.

Although I didn't use this service myself, having a good host, a good internet connection, and living so far away that SASE system would have been a pain, I feel a bit sad.
I saw how much efort you put in this sytem, and it seemed to work so well.
I think you helped a lot in sreading AMVs :D

Now I have to find another solution for distributing the Animix DVD :? (I think I answered positively when you suggested that) but anyway thanks for all the effort you put in this, I think very few persons would have done what you did.
