dvd footage

Post by Orwell » Fri Apr 09, 2004 3:11 am

i bought the dvd for an anime, hellsing, and i have a basic idea of how to get the video on my computer for editing with other animes, but when i try to rip hellsing, the program usually dies, freezes or comes in with streaks that are completely white and ruin any chance of making it worthwhile. there is the fact that the entire series is on 2 discs and that the first contains about 3-4 hours worth of it and the program doesnt seem to have an option to cut the amount of frames ripped in hopes of getting each episode one at a time. if anyone could help, id be greatly appreciated. btw, the dvd ripper is amigo dvd ripper, i cant find a better one that i can make sense of.

You might wanna try reading the Guides on ripping and editing DVD footage.. Instead of using your current DVD ripper (Amigo, is it?), I suggest using either Smart Ripper or DVD Decrypter, as mentioned in the page I linked above. About your Hellsing DVDs, I'm afraid they're most likely bootlegs since they're on two disks (the official R1, R2, and R3 releases have been on four disks). This may or may not explain the weird errors you are getting.. I have no idea if vobs are arranged in a weird order on bootlegged DVDs, but try ripping each individual vob to see if one contains a single episode. If you had *ahem* no idea you were buying bootlegs, and you're simply appalled by the atrociousness of it all, I suggest reading this page on how to detect and avoid bootlegs.

i am not disturbed in the least by bootlegging, just that fact that when i try to rip it, it can come out funny. ive tried dvd decrypter before and i have the .vob files but is there a way to get that program to turn them into editable files? like mpg or some of the higher forms that im unaware of. ive also tried smart ripper and its for whose who know what they are doing. would that convert the .vob files? and what does *ahem* mean?! always a barb when assisting the "noob".... so on and so forth.

Read the guide BT linked you to - it tells you how to turn vobs into smaller formatted clips (mpg, avi, huffyuv - best quality).

i have a question about that amvapp package, i come up with a screen that says it hasnt passed the xp logo testing, so i was curious if it works fine with xp(home) or was designed for an older system and some such technical issues that would result in more problems than my computer already has?

Bootlegs suck. Go whinge about ripping problems with bootlegs on the Chinese Mafia forums, not here. If you want decent footage, do what I did: Buy the fucking legit DVD Boxset. Theyre not bootlegs, which means *shock horror* they're encoded and authored properly and *eye roll* professionally, and they wont have ripping issues.

Me, I've never had a ripping problem. Of course, the amount of bootlegged material I own is like...hmmm...ZERO!!

Heh, I got that same 'error/warning' when I tried to reinstall (upgrade) windows movie maker 2.0 - using the download directly from the XP website. Brand new upgrade, right from the people who made it for the computer I'm using - and it still said it wasn't 'safe' to use on the computer it was made for.

That 'logo testing' is crap with windows xp. If you can install it and ignore the warning, go for it.

One of my friends insists on buying bootlegs cause he doesn't see why he needs to pay a big priace and why it takes so many discs. I borrowed his copy of Outlaw Star, and it ripped all spiffy (I wanted to rip it so I could watch it later on, compressing on a p2 333 takes fucking forever and putting them on CDs is out of the question...) There wasn't any problems with it...

Bootlegs = bad
Real thing, however much it may cost = good

I do realize that bootlegs are cheaper, but you never know how the quality will turn out or how well it will play. Another one my friend has lags in any DVD player, except for his PS2...

By the way, don't mention bootlegs around here, you'll be frowned upon... Especially by those of us who spend hundreds of dollars per month/year on legit anime...
