letterboxed? not-letterboexed? how does one tell
I finished remastering a older video of mine recently. It was a video to The first kenshin OVA's. I always though that it was like everything else and not letterboxed but then i saw a video where it was letterboxed. I am confused as to what this actually is. Is there a way to tell just by looking at the video if it should be letterboxed or not or if the source is anamorphic? I've editing it in 720 x480 using the DVD footage and i've looked at it in this resolution that it doesn't look right if i aquish it to be the letterboxed ratio.

The letterboxed Kenshin OVAs are probably from the Director's Cut version of the OVAs, which were a cropped, slightly differently edited, continuous version of the 4-OVA set. If you have the "Trust" and "Betrayal" DVDs, you should have a full-screen version with four episodes.
The Macross Plus OVAs/Movie got a similar treatment, IIRC.

The usual case for letterboxing occurs when one wants to present a widescreen image on a more square (ugh I can't believe I said that) display.
Letterboxed DVDs differ from anamorphic DVDs in that they have the corrections already done, with the video in 4:3. Anamorphic DVDs contain metadata that instruct the player how to handle the stream for display.
